1916 Catalog

The 1916 Catalog states that in that issue they were introducing a new 4-inch bench jointer. The following is the description of this machine from the 1916 Catalog.

The Crescent 4 Inch Bench Jointer

This small jointer is a very convenient and valuable machine for the individual wood-worker. Being small in size it is better adapted for small work than a large jointer; besides, it can be placed where it is most convenient, either on the work bench or near to it.

The machine is furnished with round safety head, tilting fence for bevel work, automatic guard, and has the rear table arranged for rabbeting. (Not made with square head.) It is made either for belt-drive or with motor attached direct, as shown by the cuts. The belt-driven machine may be purchased either with or without the countershaft.

For straightening and squaring up the edges of boards, plank or studding the machine will do in one operation the same work that requires a number of operations with jack-plane, fore-plane and square, and will do the work so much faster and better. For reducing the width of a board a heavy cut may be taken, and in this way accomplish in one operation what usually has to be done with rip-saw and plane. For edging off to a bevel, the little machine will do the work quickly and accurately, as the fence is made to tilt to any angle from square to 45° for this kind of work. The time that the machine will save in many-ways, and the accuracy of the" finished work, will appeal to contractors and other wood-workers who have to figure close on their jobs. The difference in cost of doing work by machine or by hand frequently determines the difference between making a profit on the job, or loss.

When electric current is available, the direct motor drive is most desirable. The motor furnished is ¼ horsepower, which requires very little current to operate, yet is sufficient to do all the work the machine is intended for. The motor is furnished with a suitable cord for attaching to an ordinary lamp socket. In this form the machine is portable, can be carried and set where wanted, and does not have to be fastened down. In placing order for motor driven machine it is always necessary to give full specifications of the current that will be used, stating voltage, and whether direct or alternating current. If alternating, must state whether single-phase, two-phase or three-phase, and the frequency or cycle. Machines will not be shipped till this information is explicitly given.
