[...] like they used to”. Indeed, they don’t! Much of this interest has been centered on the products of the Oliver Machinery Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, as many believe these were the finest woodworking machines ever built. Accounts of Oliver’s history have been published previously. While much of this information is accurate, newly-discovered evidence of the company’s very early history requires that some revisions be made to the existing record. I had seen old Oliver catalogs and was amazed by the size, features, [...]

Reproduced here with the permission of the author. History Joseph W. Oliver was born in Oswego, New York, in 1864 and moved to Grand Rapids in 1878 at the age of 14. He became an apprentice machinist at the Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company and later at Butterworth & Lowe Co., which originally made wood trimmers. The first wood trimmer was made in 1879 at Middletown, Connecticut, and patented by W.R. Fox. A wood trimmer or miter trimmer stands midway between a hand tool and a power machine tool. Hand or foot activated, two razor sharp knives, operating [...]

OLIVER EARLY SERIAL NUMBERS
By Jeff McVey, Copyright 2000
(reproduced here with permission of the author) Oliver Machinery Co. history has always related that the firm started putting serial numbers on their equipment in February of 1907. Early that year, the company was incorporated and moved into their new factory on Clancy Street in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The organization had been founded, supposedly in 1890, as the American Machinery Co. (AMC). In 1903, probably to avoid confusion with the American Wood-Working Machinery Co., the [...]

      Oliver Evans had within him the making of a great engineer. He was born near Newport, Del., in 1755 or 1756, of farmer parentage. At fourteen he was apprenticed to a wheelwright, but continued his eager efforts to secure an education by studying by the light of burning shavings after the long work hours were ended.       While still an apprentice, the idea came to him [...]
[...] of safety issues, the clamshell style of cutterhead is no longer used by modern manufacturers. Oliver advertisment for their "Safety" cutterhead Safety Issues The problem with a clamshell head is that the knives are directly held in place by the bolt heads. The faster the head spins, the higher the stress on the bolt heads. Hit a knot, and the impact transfers directly to the bolt heads. Now, are the bolts original, never been over-tightened, no stress cracks where the heads meet the stems, made of top-quality steel that was accurately machined and properly heat [...]

Doug Westlind wrote: I bought an Oliver table saw about a year ago and the fellow I bought it from had the part number from Sherwin Williams (henceforth known as S-W) for the original green paint. Some phone calls to my local S-W dealer (Portland Oregon) have yielded the following: The paint was made originally at the S-W Granville, MI plant and is no longer stocked. The Portland plant got the formula from Granville and can mix some up for me. The cost will be in the neighborhood of $100/gal plus shipping (they are to get back to me on the final cost). If anyone would [...]
Here is how the tapered spindles on the Oliver 288 and the 287 come apart.
The drawbolt goes all the way through the removable spindle and threads into the mandrel securing the spindle to it. The counter clockwise spindle will have a right hand threaded spindle nut. They also have a right hand threaded spindle draw bolt as shown here;
The clockwise spindle on a 288 will have a left hand spindle nut and a left hand threaded drawbolt. Remove the drawbolt by locking the spindle with the spindle locking pin and turn the drawbolt with a wrench. Once the drawbolt [...]

For example, for Oliver machines with open, oil bath bearings, speeds ISO Viscosity Classification System Many petroleum products are graded according to the ISO Viscosity Classification System, approved by the international standards organization (ISO). Each ISO viscosity grade number corresponds to the mid-point of a viscosity range expressed in centistokes(cSt) at 40 deg C. For example, a lubricant with an ISO grade of 32 has a viscosity within the range of 28.8-35.2, the midpoint [...]
[...] processes by American producers. The industry instead turned to Blanchard grinding for surfacing. Even Oliver was grinding like a mad man at the end. Now, more and more, we are seeing large flat bed CNC type grinders similar to the Mattison surface grinder used by Grizzly. Yet several makers in Europe still refuse to give it up; Martin, Hofmann, Knapp, Logosol, etc. The list goes on. The reason is clear – When it comes down to preparing cast iron surfaces for woodworking machines, the planer and its cousin, the metal shaper were/are the cat's meow, at least if you are [...]
