I thought I'd update this info a bit since paint stores change their formulas over time. When I tried to use some of the info on this page to get paint for my 1946 Unisaw in 2015, Sherwin Williams couldn't use the outdated info. So, I had them do a custom color match with their current deep base alkyd enamel using the undisturbed original paint under the little cover plate behind the tilt hand wheel, then I paid extra ($7/can before promo discount) to have them put the custom-mixed quart into 6 aerosol (rattle) [...]

I want to paint my old machine and I want to match the original color. What color paint do I use?
This is the age old question that keeps coming up on the discussion forum and unfortunately there seems to be about as many answers out there as there old machines. If you want to match the original color of your machine, the first step is to try to find some original paint on your machine to work with. Step one is a good cleaning of your machine. Soap and water works well to clean up an old machine but in some [...]
[...] oil, dirt and grime that had accumulated on it over the past 100 or so years. Most of the old gray paint that had been brushed on at some point came off with ease under the power of the pressure washer. Here is a shot after cleaning her up a bit: Next was to start removing all of the parts off of the band saw. When I bought the saw, I had been informed that there were a few broken parts. Two pieces on the top bearing had been broken at some point in time - probably when the machine was knocked over on it's side out in weeks outside the factory that it was found. [...]
For Atlas machines that were sold as Craftsman, Krylon Regal Blue is a close but not perfect match. Original Atlas machinery was a a dark gray but I have not heard of an exact match being made yet. For Craftsman/Walker-Turner 12" bandsaw, another close but not perfect match is Benjamin Moore UTILAC High Gloss Metal and Wood Enamel - Classic Navy #490 36. Scott Andrew added: I recently restored a 1937-1940 Craftsman 6" Jointer. I spent considerable time to match the original color before stripping the machine to bare metal. I used Benjamin [...]
[...] Indeed, they don’t! Much of this interest has been centered on the products of the Oliver Machinery Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, as many believe these were the finest woodworking machines ever built. Accounts of Oliver’s history have been published previously. While much of this information is accurate, newly-discovered evidence of the company’s very early history requires that some revisions be made to the existing record. I had seen old Oliver catalogs and was amazed by the size, features, and quality of their products. One type of machine that especially intrigued [...]

[...] gearbox with the shaft still in it, then complete the disassembly afterwards. It’s a lot easier to press/bash the outfeed roller shaft out of the gearbox when the combo is out of the main body of the planer. You can see in the previous picture that the gearbox was removed with the outfeed roller still attached. This problem happens most frequently with the outfeed roller, as it seems to have the most stuff on it. To get the outfeed roller shaft out of the planer while still attached to the gearbox, you will need to remove the hex nut assembly (A-49, A50), spring (A-51), [...]
[...] like. For the brushes I like to have an assortment of stiff brushes, wire brushes and just plain old paint brushes. It's also good to have a shop vac. An air compressor is a must. 4 - Put Together A Game Plan About five minutes after buying a vintage machine the typical buyer begins to form a game plan of how to go about restoration. There are a few ways to tackle this job. Tear the whole thing down bit by bit, piece by piece, clean everything up at once, re-paint and reassemble. This is not for the faint of heart especially when you find [...]
[...] how to get them off. I really like pressing shafts out of pulleys and such using either a hydraulic press or an arbor press, and I decided to adapt a similar method to this job. Using some ½-inch thick plate steel, cut out a half moon shaped piece to fit on the back of the gear and cut a a slot on the flat side to fit over the shaft. Nothing fancy, I just used a cutting torch to cut the parts out and a grinder to knock off the rough edges. I then used a piece of chalk to trace around the spokes with the piece in place to figure out where [...]

By Jeff McVey, Copyright 2000
(reproduced here with permission of the author) Oliver Machinery Co. history has always related that the firm started putting serial numbers on their equipment in February of 1907. Early that year, the company was incorporated and moved into their new factory on Clancy Street in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The organization had been founded, supposedly in 1890, as the American Machinery Co. (AMC). In 1903, probably to avoid confusion with the American Wood-Working Machinery Co., [...]
[...] companies) it was. The Clement plant had an odd angle badge called the redundant badge because it says “Co. Company”. If your machine has this it is important to include that into the photo submission. Third is the “SHOP NO.” tag. This is in effect the serial no. for the machine. AWWM did not do any other form of serial #’s that we know of. Fourth is the Eagle & Globe Badge: Fifth are the casting Part nos. They are nothing more than part numbers and appear on later machines. Occasionally you can find all these markings on a single machine. Usually band saws [...]

Moving to Lawrence, Mass., he was apprenticed at the age of fourteen to the well-known Essex Machine Co. of that city, going to Hartford in 1852, at the age of twenty. There he was employed at Colt's Armory, at that time the Mecca of many New England mechanics, where he met Francis A. Pratt and Asa S. Cook. [...] but it's still a fine saw none the less. I have not paid much attention to the various Delta drill press lines as there were so many through the years it's darn near impossible to focus on one popular model. I also lack a number of catalogs making a drill press write up difficult. Similarly, lathes suffer the same fate. The Delta Specialty Company began business in 1919 in a one car garage at 969 Louis Avenue on Milwaukee's near northwest side. It was called the Delta Specialty Company until the early thirties.
