[...] which he shipped to me from Australia. I had always wondered why my father’s machine was branded a Rockwell Delta yet in the catalogue, an identical machine—in fact, most of the machines—were labelled as Tauco. It was only many years later that I found out that Tauco was the export arm of Rockwell Delta USA and that Rockwell Delta machines were exported under that name. I then discovered that Rockwell Delta actually had a manufacturing plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa [...]
[...] the name was finally changed to Flying Chips. The significance of the name change had more to do with Rockwell's wanting to drop the Delta name than anything else though a column called "Delta Citations", honoring a different woodworker each month, remained up into the 70's. In the 60's the magazine began to play down the industrial quality tools in favor of the bottom feeding Homecraft and Compactatool lines. Historically this was the low water mark for woodworking machines. It wasn't until this 80's that the course reversed itself and the hobbyist woodworker became [...]
[...] rated for the motor starting current. Service Panel circuit breakers are designed to protect building wiring, not motors plugged into wall receptacles. If your electrical box circuit breaker trips before your motor burns up, it is incidental, not on purpose. However, motor starters are designed to trip on heater overload before the motor they start burns up. Manual Motor Starters Manual motor starters are simply manual switches designed to control larger current loads typical of motor control. They may be small and similar to the light switches in your home, or they [...]

The Turboencabulator One of the most important technological advances to be developed by Rockwell, the turboencabulator remains a shining example of ingenuity, persistence, and collaboration. The Early Years The initial design of the turboencabulator is credited to Arthur D. Little, Inc., a venerable Cambridge, Mass, chemical and engineering research firm. A 1946 article from Time magazine lauds this accomplishment. General Electric's contribution Although the turboencabulator was nearly fully-functional, Mr. Little was forced to sell his business to General Electric [...]

Typical single phase motor wiring
Typical single phase motor wiring diagrams including HI/Lo voltage, start and run capacitors (if used), start and run windings and centrifugal switches. Single phase motors generally need a starter circuit to get them turning. That starter circuit is turned off by a centrifugal switch once the motor reaches a minimum RPM. These diagrams are intended to represent the basics of how a single phase motor is wound. They may or may not apply to your [...]

1947 Delta Unisaw Serial Number Plate Here is a plate from a 1980 Rockwell Model 6 Jointer
Some machines, for whatever reason, may have had their serial number plates removed or torn off, making a positive vintage identification more difficult. You can however locate the rivet or screw holes in the machine and perhaps a ghost image of the plate, and use the distance between the holes to narrow down the machine's vintage: 2 3/4" means that the missing plate was Style 1 or 2, and 3 3/4" means a Style 3 plate. Where plates were located [...]

Good day. Thank you for the excellent article about Rockwell-Delta in South Africa. I am the proud custodian of a variety of Rockwell woodworking machines which were purchased by my late father-in-law, Ernst Marais, from Rockwell in Port Elizabeth, after the 1986 flood referred to in your article. That particular flood stands out in my memory from when I was a young boy, living with my parents in Port Elizabeth at the time. Over the following weeks I will try to documented all these machines in the Vintage Machinery [...]
[...] around 1947 or 1948. These serial numbers have all been found a small red tag with both the Crescent and Rockwell names. This style of serial number was used until at least 1949. 1234-A - This serial number group is somewhat confusing. Around 1947 or so, the Crescent factory began making several machines that were designed by Delta. These machines included the Delta 20" Band Saw, the Delta 12-14" Table Saw and the Delta 8" jointer (the 8" jointer was really more of a hybrid of Delta and Crescent designs). When these machines left the factory, they were badged as being [...]
[...] Contributed by Neil Bellenger. In May of 1956 Kearney & Trecker sold its Walker-Turner Division to Rockwell. At some point thereafter the tags were changed to read "Walker-Turner Division of Rockwell". It is currently unknown if this change occurred before the start of Type 4 serial numbers. Type 4 : The last serial number system began in October of 1956. The machine type is designated by a two-digit prefix, e.g., No. 11-0001 was the first 20-inch drill press as of October 1956. Details on the two-digit prefix, when known, appear in the [...]
[...] really doesn't make any difference in theory. There is a difference in the power lost in the supply wiring though. . All things being equal, a 110 volt motor will lose 4 times more power through line loss than a 220v motor. This mainly means that a 220 volt motor will get to speed more quickly than it's 110v counterpart. Even this is irrelevant if the supply lines are less than 50 feet long. The cost of operation is the same. You buy watts not amps. Running a 110 motor at 10 amps is the same as 220 at 5 amps with regard to cost of operation. 2 - How can I tell if I [...]

[...] parts inside the cylinder. The make-and-break system is simpler electrically, requires less care in wiring, does not have to be insulated so carefully and the spark is more certain. It is difficult to lubricate the many mechanical parts of the make-and-break system. The make-and-break system is usually used on stationary slow-speed engines and to some extent on traction engines.       The jump-spark system is better adapted for high-speed and multiple-cylinder engines than is the make-and-break, and is used on automobiles, small stationary engines, marine [...]

Rockwell Belt Sander Restoration Pics (updated all finished) . You can see the platen is stamped steel instead of cast iron and it's in bad shape with more than a 1/8" bow in the center. Mine also had the typical worn groove .. Right even with the top of the table. So to flatten it out I took some J.B. weld and mixed up enough to cover the surface. After it set up over night I mounted the platen back on the sander. I then took some duct tape and wrapped the [...]
