Application of the term "woodworking machinery" was not coincident with the earliest devices of a manufacturing plant producing this type of machinery. Neither did the term come from the making of tools to be used by hand in connection with wood material. A firm producing lathes or other machines of iron or steel to be used by other shops often turned to the production and sale of a machine suitable for making furniture, planing lumber, or a machine for tennoning or mortising.
