Triple

• Single Pole is similar to a light switch. Only one lead is disconnected from the power source. Typically, this would be the Hot (Black) lead. However in the case of miswired circuits, non-polarized plugs, etc., the Hot lead may end up wired to the motor and only the Neutral (White) lead being controlled. Single Pole controls are best NOT used in motor start circuits.
  

• Double Pole is common on Single Phase power where both the Hot (Black or Red) and Neutral (White) are disconnected from the power source. This is good practice as it leaves no chance that the motor may remain energized even with the switch off.
  

• Triple Pole (or more) would be required for Three Phase power to ensure that each of the three Hot (Black, Red & White) legs are disconnected from the power source.
