H. J. Cordesman, Sr., died December 3 in Cincinnati, where he was born and lived all his life. He was seventy-four years old.
Mr. Cordesman was one of the pioneers In the manufacture of wood working machinery and until his retirement six years ago was engaged in the industry since boyhood. Many of the wood-working machines now in common use were originated by him.
He began his career with his father, who operated a foundry and machine shop, making both metal and wood working machinery. In 1871 he and his brother began, in a small way, to manufacture wood working machinery, the concern being known as Cordesman & Bro. In 1875 Mr. Thomas P. Egan bought a third interest and the firm name was changed to Cordesman Egan & C.o In 1884 Mr, Cordesman sold his Interest and it became The Egan Co., which later on was absorbed by the Fay & Egan Co.
In 1886 Mr Cordesman again started a new business, known as the Cordesman Machine Co., and of recent years as the Cordesman-Rechtin Co. He had many fine traits and will be especially remembered by the older generation. A widow, three daughters and a son, H. J. Cordesman, Jr., vice president of the Chicago Machinery Exchange, survive him.
